Welcome to the Skills Enhanced course on Proper Waste Disposal. Let’s begin.
SECTION 1: Learning Outcomes
By the end of this short module, you’ll know how to deal with waste the right way – safely, cleanly, and without any mess. We’ll walk you through:
✔ The different types of waste you’ll run into
✔ How to handle rubbish without spills or smells
✔ What to do with glass, chemicals or anything risky
✔ And how to keep it all clean and under control.
SECTION 2: Waste Types
Not all rubbish is the same. There are 3 main types:
General waste – like tissues, food scraps, and random junk
Recyclables – bottles, clean containers, cardboard
Hazardous – broken glass, old batteries, used chemicals, even PPE like gloves and masks
SECTION 3: Why Sorting Waste Matters
Mixing rubbish is not just gross – it can spread germs, ruin recycling, and break hotel rules. Keeping things separate helps:
✔ Avoid accidents
✔ Make it easier to clean
✔ Protect the environment
✔ Keep you out of trouble with managers or inspectors.
SECTION 4: Safety Gear & Handling Waste
🧤 Gloves – Always wear them. Not just for gross stuff, but because they protect you from sharp bits, spills, and germs. Use disposable gloves for each clean, and chuck them after.
😷 Mask – This isn’t just a COVID thing. Masks help protect you from dust, mould, and strong smells.
👟 Closed shoes – No thongs or open shoes. If something leaks or you drop a bin bag, you don’t want it landing on your foot.
💦 Hand washing – After you’re done, take off your gloves carefully and wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds.
SECTION 5: Dealing with Dangerous Stuff (Hazardous Waste)
Hazardous waste includes broken glass, chemicals, batteries, old cloths with disinfectant, or used PPE.
🔴 Must go in red/yellow marked bins
🛍️ Use leak-proof, heavy-duty bags
📰 Wrap sharp items first
✋ Don’t push down full bins
☣️ Report spills and don’t clean dangerous waste alone
SECTION 6: Bagging & Transporting Waste Properly
🛍️ Use the right-sized bag
🔗 Double knot to prevent leaks
🧱 Thicker bags for heavy or wet items
🚫 Don’t overfill
📘 Transport Tips:
– Avoid guest areas
– Use staff bins/routes
– Carry smelly waste in lidded bins
– Don’t drag bags – they may rip
– Clean up any dropped rubbish
SECTION 7: Cleaning & Deodorising Bins
✅ Clean bins weekly or when they smell
✅ Use disinfectant (especially the lid, rim, and base)
✅ Dry bins and add deodoriser like baking soda
📘 Cleaning Checklist:
1. Remove the bag slowly
2. Rinse if needed
3. Spray with disinfectant
4. Wipe and dry
5. Add deodoriser
SECTION 8: Recycling the Right Way
♻️ Keep recyclables clean and dry
♻️ Don’t mix materials unless told to
♻️ Avoid wishcycling – no dirty napkins, greasy containers, or soft plastics
SECTION 9: Reusing Where Possible
🔁 Reuse clean items like paper or containers
🧴 Refill spray bottles instead of tossing
👀 Check with your manager on reuse policies
📘 Reuse Examples:
– Refill bottles with correct chemicals
– Stack clean paper for reuse
– Wash and reuse microfibre cloths
SECTION 10: Where to Put the Waste
🚪 Don’t carry waste through guest areas
🛗 Use staff routes and service lifts
🗑️ Dispose of waste correctly — general, recycling, hazardous in correct bins
📍 Ask if unsure and always close the lids
SECTION 11: Recap & Takeaways
✔ Sort waste properly
✔ Wear gloves and wash your hands
✔ Be careful with dangerous waste
✔ Tie bags well and don’t overload them
✔ Keep bins clean and fresh
✔ Recycle and reuse properly
✔ Use proper disposal routes and never go through guest areas
Do it right and you’re keeping your space clean, your team safe, and your hotel looking sharp.
